Bowlers down Shroton as 1st XI bounce back!

The Minstermen's seam department step up to crush league newcomers Shroton!

On a cloudy, overcast day, the Minstermen's 1st XI travelled to newly promoted Shroton looking to bounce back from last weeks defeat at home to Dorchester. With Tom Caines unavailable, Ian Broom returned in what was the only change from last week. Skipper James Miller won the toss on a green surface and had no hesitation in inserting the home side. Ed Bartlett and James Williams bowled a fantastic opening spell that produced just 21 runs from the first 15 overs despite neither picking up a wicket as the Shroton openers dropped anchor. Harrison Bowles, in replacing Williams at the northern end of the ground, did pick up the crucial first wicket in his opening over with a beauty that nipped back off the surface and bowled the opener. Broom (2-26) then replaced Bartlett and he too had a wicket in his first over as Shepherd chipped back a return catch. Broom and Bowles (2-22) continued to apply the pressure that the opening bowlers had created and Shroton were never allowed to increase the run rate as both bowlers picked up a second wicket a piece as the Shroton inning faltered. Ben Ratcliffe bowled the only 3 overs of spin in the innings but also picked up a wicket, bowling Doble through the gate. Williams and Bartlett then returned to complete their allocation of overs and together they blew away the Shroton tail. Williams claiming 3 wickets to finish with figures of 8.1-2-23-3 and Bartlett the 1 wicket to finish with figures of 9-5-11-1. Shroton limping to a final total of 93 from 32 overs.

In reply, Colin Randall and George Bartlett had put on 20 from the opening six overs before Randall departed, caught at slip for 8, Mark House was then dismissed 3 overs later and David Guest also departed before the scheduled tea break as the minstermen stuttered to 35-3. George Bartlett (36*) and James Williams (32*) weathered the storm before the tea break as the minstermen made it to 66-3 from 16 overs. After tea it took just 15 balls for the game to be completed as Williams smashed 2 sixes and 2 fours to complete what was, in the end, a comfortable 19 point victory.
