The following day Wimborne & Colehill were thankful that The Leaze survived any further downpours and with great efforts from the groundsman the T20 match against former national T20 champs Bournemouth took place as scheduled.

Bournemouth batted first and with Wimborne & Colehill showing the cobwebs that come with not playing for a few weeks due to the weather, Bournemouth raced to 184 for 5 (Mills 70, Wilkinson 40, Porter 34) off their 20 overs. The highlight of Wimborne & Colehill’s bowling performance was veteran seamer Gavin Will 2 for 29 off 4 overs, debutant quick Tom Blackley 2 for 44 off 4 overs and left arm spinner Joe Weld 1 for 24 off 4 overs.

The Minstermen reply didn’t get off to the best of starts as they slumped to 16 for 3 however Ben Bridgen (51 off 38 balls) and Ashley Collison (39 off 37 balls) put on a fine 84 run partnership as Wimborne & Colehill closed on 118 for 7 from their 20 overs (Barlow 2 for 11, Spicer 2 for 12).

Thanks to Bournemouth for coming to play us and for those that helped out on the day, including the umpires, groundsman, scorers, barbeque chefs, bar staff, quiz master plus anyone else that I have missed. The best team won the quiz by the way…. or so I was told!

So then Andy, you must be pleased with getting a side the calibre of Bournemouth CC down to The Leaze for a T20 game?

I’m delighted to be honest in what should be a great day for the Club and spectators and a great way to finish off our season. Bournemouth won the Southern League last season and have always excelled in Twenty20 cricket with a young side that enjoy each others success and therefore it will be a stern test of our players abilities.

That’s always the plan, in T20 anything can happen and all 11 of our Wimborne & Colehill players selected will have to be at their maximum to win the match.

I probably know at least 90% of their side and they are all quality players. Mark House (Mousey) doesn’t favour a 6-3 leg side field I’ve learnt that this season, while I really hope they don’t select Johnny Combs in their 11 as he’s a real potential dangerman (just ask the South African fathers of Stellenbosch). Nick Park is also a danger if he’s brave enough to face Ash Collison’s leg spin, but I worry Parky may bottle the occasion as he might struggle to get out of Ash’s pocket.

Mousey is well known to the Wimborne crowd and he stands literally head and shoulders above his team mates, massive player that kid and a top bloke too. For ourselves I can see Colin Randall getting a big score at the top of the order while with the ball Tom Heyes’ sheer pace could prove invaluable.

I like your comparisons with James Martin and Nigella Lawson but I seriously think Lord & Lady Hills’ bbq’s are better than what those two famous chefs could ever produce. Earlier in the season Lord David MBE cooked some fantastic sausages and burgers with his glamorous assistant Lady Hills ensuring the baps, sauce and onions were all in place for a great barbecue, its just a shame son-in-law James Miller won’t be around to help out this time.

Well obviously I’d be foolish not to want Grant Cormack in my quiz team, he turned down a place at Cambridge University a couple of years back. Would also like to have a spot for a natural nerd and the club webmaster Richard Fenner is ideal to fill those shoes.

With Dorset stars such as Nick Park, and Wimborne old-boy Mark House in their line up, Bournemouth CC will put up a tough fight for the home side and are in excellent T20 form this year. They line up in the final of the Southern Electric T20 cup again this year (at the Rose Bowl on 9th August) and will be hoping to proceed to the national finals again, so Wimborne & Colehill will need to be on their top form and rise to the occasion to cause an upset.

During the afternoon, a BBQ will be running and the bar will be open, so come along and enjoy a good afternoon of cricket, food and drink. There will be post match activities including a quiz so make sure you stick around!

Wimborne & Colehill 1st XI won their first silverware since 1864 as they confidently dispatched ‘The Wimborne Legends’ and Broadstone 1st XI in the T20 competition last Sunday.

The first semi-final saw Wimborne Legends, looking youthful in their scarlet shirts, total 103 all out with Justin Perry 26 top scoring. Joe Weld (2 for 15 off 3 overs) and Rob Hatchard (2 for 30 off 4 overs) were the pick of the bowlers for the 1st XI. Opening bats Colin Randall (36) & Ollie Bertrand (40*) put on 66 for the first wicket as Joe Weld (21*) came in at 3 and saw the Minstermen home in only the 14th over for a 9 wicket victory.

The second semi-final was eventually decided by an IPL style “super over” as Broadstone totalled 145 for 7 (Walpole 31*, Burns 29, Jones 21) with the pick of the Dorset u.17s bowlers being Ben Ladd-Gibbon (2 for 20 off 3 overs) and Jake Hurley (2 for 36 off 4 overs). Dorset u.17s looked to be crusing to victory prior to Quinn (83) getting run out as they ended up choking towards the end of their innings and ended up dead level at 145 for 7. The super over saw Broadstone’s Chapman & Jones smash 18 from it which Dorset u.17s never threatened in their response.

With defending champions Broadstone in the final once again Wimborne lost the toss and were inserted. Randall (26) & Bertrand (20) opened up at a more than useful 8 an over 39 run partnership. Number 3 Weld also continued his golden weekend by hitting a quick fire 31 however a middle order wobble was saved by Pamp Hill heart throb James Miller’s swashbuckling 41 from only 27 balls, that included 3 sixes that allowed thew Wimborne T20 Wombles to post 149 for 7 from their 20 overs.

The big hitting Hanratty (47) was the only Broadstone batter to stand firm as Tom Heyes (2 for 13 from 3.1 overs), Ollie Bertrand (3 for 13 from 4 overs) and Ben Ratcliffe (4 for 15 from 2.5 overs) took the wickets as Broadstone crumbled to 99 all out to leave Wimborne victorious by a massive 50 runs.

Former England u.19 spin bowler Lord Hills will be operating a barbecue throughout the afternoon for players and spectators alike, unless Jimmer Williams hits a maximum off the last ball of the innings in the 1st semi-final and Hills leads his side to their second successive final. If this proves to be the case the 1st XI will be in charge of the catering. Let’s hope the 1st XI right last years wrong!, The clubhouse bar will also be operation throughout the day.

With it being T20 orange balls will be used and the Minstermen 1st XI will be wearing their T20 uniforms of navy with sky blue trim, it is yet unknown whether the Legends will be seen wearing all ‘old gold’ rather than the classical creams.

Broadstone won the trophy last year and it is hoped their skipper Sam Chapman has not dropped the trophy from the bus of their victory parade around the tracks of delph woods and it returns in pristine condition.

A decent crowd of spectators is expected on what is normally an exciting brand of cricket.
